1st Rule of Parenthood

So inspired by Kim's prodding, I'm going to post my (very serious) rules for parenthood. This is number 1:

Never assume for one minute that the baby is going to sleep longer than 30 seconds. This means: prioritize.

If I have to eat, for example, I will usually not do it in lieu of -- say -- catching up on emails or doing laundry. This is a bad idea. The priority should be eating. Not doing anything else because you figure the baby's going to sleep forever and ever.

Inevitably when I think I have 4 hours to do whatever (like, say, eat, brush my teeth, do laundry, take a shower and THEN nap) the baby will have other plans.

Just like she did today. It's 4 p.m. and I'm now eating lunch. I'm hoping to brush my teeth and change out of my pajamas before Geoff gets home.
